"We saw the lightning and that was the guns and then we heard the thunder and that was the big guns; and then we heard the rain falling and that was the blood falling; and when we came to get in the crops, it was dead men that we reaped."
-Harriet Tubman
Women Roles In the Vietnam War
All women who served in this war were volunteers. They were never forced in this war, and had a choice not to attend. All women had to sign up in the Vietnam war. They were either civilian or military personel. The women were given the easier jobs, than the men. Most women in the Vietnam War were given nurse jobs. This particular job was to help out the injured and sick soldiers. During the orientation in becoming a nurse, the women went through hell. Orientation was the worst experience for most of these women. Whatever the captain told them to do, they had to do it if it meant cutting off ligaments. Rumors had it that the women giving the nurse jobs, was not trained properly. They weren't given enough time to train. If you were a nurse, you became a officer within the first ten days of duty. Even after the war, the women were treated wrong. They were treated as second class soldiers, and were not respected like the men in the war. The women had more to prove. The women in the war was seen as caregivers and helpmates, which was not satisfying. The women main role in the Vietnam war was support. If it wasn't for these women, we would have lost this dreadful war.
